We decided to visit the garden centre to get our plants started for the year. We chose several varieties of tomatoes (supersweet 100, Tumbling Tom, Alicante, Golden Sunrise and Roma) We love to plant plenty of cherry tomatoes because the children love eating them so much. Also, with any surplus this year, I would love to make some chutney. My older sister makes a lovely green tomato chutney with the tomatoes that never quite ripen so I will ask her for the recipe.
We also bought a Fernspot cucumber which we grew last year. We had so many cucumbers from just one plant! Hopefully, we will have lots again this year.
K chose her pumpkin plant, one which will be large and deep orange in colour, perfect for Hallowe'en. This will be the third year we have grown pumpkins for Hallowe'en. The girls really enjoy seeing them grow throughout the summer...and then there is always the slight panic about whether they will ripen in time for Hallowe'en. But they always do.
For my herb garden, I have started with Garden Mint, Oregano, French Parsley and Coriander. I wanted to get some basil, but the recent cold weather had killed what the garden centre had so it won't be available fo another few weeks. I have planted the herbs all in the same large pot. To stop the mint from spreading over the whole container, I have planted it in a medium size pot and submerged it into the soil to contain the roots.
