Little L has had chicken pox since last Thursday.
She felt like playing again today.

We've been using this Aloe Vera gel to try to help cool and heal her skin.

autumn days

 
It's the official  first day of Autumn on Friday but really, it feels like Autumn days have been with us for a little while. The leaves are turning glorious colours, falling to the ground and being chased around by the wind. Shiny conkers are being gathered into the children's pockets on the way to school along with exclamations of 'Look at the leaves falling, it must be Autumn time now.' They are thinking about the yearly traditions that come along with the new season and mark this time of year. I am thinking about warmth; finding them warm socks, slippers, vests and changing summer quilts for winter quilts as the nights get cooler. I am looking foward to Kyrie's new series of posts about how they weave warmth into their days.

When We Went To The Park by Shirley Hughes
Recommended reading age: 18 months to 3 years

'When We Went To The Park' is essentially a counting book about a little toddler's walk with her grandpa. We include it in our Autumn seasonal book basket because of the beautiful imagery perfect for the season. There are illustrations of leaves in browns, oranges and reds throughout this little story and the line '...and so many leaves I couldn't count them all' as the little girl is shown kicking leaves in the late afternoon as the rosy sun begins to set. The girl is shown wrapped up in her warm coat and wearing thick, woollen tights.

Our first apple day of the season! 
It made me want to bake apple pie.

I checked out the greenhouse today, to see what needs to be done. There is salad still to be picked over the next few weeks. It needs to be tidied up before the winter.

If all the tomatoes don't ripen, I might make some green tomato chutney.

Our Seasonal Book Basket : Apples and Pumpkins

This Autumn/Fall picture book has very simple, seasonal text, beautiful for this time of year. It's Autumn and time for picking apples and finding the perfect pumpkin in preparation for Hallowe'en. The pictures are simply drawn using bright, Autumnal colours illustrating a family trip to a pumpkin patch and apple orchard. The story ends on Hallowe'en night and I love that instead of sweets/candy, the mother 'gives away lots of our red shiny apples for trick or treat,while I go trick or treating down our street'.
